Your Body Is Changing, Not Your Desires: Keeping Your Sex Life Vibrant

One of the best pieces of advice for maintaining a healthy sexual appetite during the menopausal transition may be fairly straightforward - have more sex!

Multiple studies have found that women who remain sexually active tend to experience fewer issues with low libido and vaginal dryness.

A 2009 study published in the American Journal of Medicine looked at over 2,000 women and concluded that among those going through menopause, sexual behavior was a predictor of future sexual behavior. The more frequently women engaged in intimacy, the better their reported levels of desire, arousal, and overall sexual satisfaction.

Similarly, a 2011 study in the American Journal of Epidemiology revealed sexually active women had a 28% lower risk of vaginal atrophy and dryness compared to non-active women. The researchers theorized that the increased blood flow during arousal helps nourish and maintain vaginal health.

So in many ways, having sex begets wanting more sex during this phase of life. Sexual activity seems to provide a positive feedback loop that preserves libido, blood flow, and genital responsiveness. Like any capacity, the more we mindfully engage and practice tuning into pleasure, the more primed our bodies and minds become for future desire and arousal.

Of course, lower libido at times is normal. But by consciously prioritizing intimacy as you're able - through sexual activity, sensual practices, erotic exploration or opening new conversations with your partner(s) - you're signaling to your body and psyche that this dimension remains valued and vital. And your body is incredibly wise when it comes to rising to meet your passionate intentions.

The research indicates there are tangible physiological and psychological benefits to staying sexually engaged through the menopausal transition. Making time for erotic rejuvenation and intimate connections isn't just pleasurable - it's preventative self-care that can help preserve your vibrant sexuality for years to come.
